The AA has advised travellers who have a car accident abroad to treat the incident in the same way they would as if it had happened in the UK.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the group, has said that drivers should look to take photographs of the scene - including registration numbers and the damage done to vehicles - to pass on to car insurance companies.

They should then call their car insurance provider immediately, he stated, adding that it is important to keep the number handy when travelling abroad.

Automotive services group RAC has reported that Britons who travel to Spain or Portugal are three times more likely to be involved in an accident than they would be within the UK.

He also offered advice for those awaiting the emergency services and tow-away vehicles.

"Always do what the locals do too - take sunhats, sun cream and lots of water with you if you are going somewhere hot ... dehydration can be a real and serious problem."

InsureandGo offers a number of car insurance policies for a range of coverage options.
