Before investing in
car insurance and buying a new motor, people should ensure they do as much research as possible about their purchase.
Talking on behalf of Kitemark, former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson said that when it comes to buying a new car it is "all in the forward planning".
Potential car buyers could find that thoroughly researching their purchase might save them from having to claim on a car insurance policy in the near future.
Faults on a vehicle which are not found before buying could cause insurance problems at a later date.
Mr Wilson commented that using common sense was essential when buying a new vehicle.
The motor expert said that "looking to see if they (the seller) is a member of a motoring federation, practice good standards and have got a reputation" were all good tips.
He also pointed out that customers may want to check out safety product tests of a car they buy.
Kitemark now offers a garage scheme which allows drivers to take their vehicles to be tested and audited to Kitemark standards.
