Those travelling within France today are likely to experience delays and cancellations as many of the nation's bus and train drivers go on strike in protest of pension reforms implemented by President Nicolas Sarkozy.

As well as a 50 per cent reduction in train operations, air travel service is also expected to see delays, the BBC reports.

Furthermore, postal workers are expected to join in the strikes, which revolve around recent reforms that require those working within the travel industry to work for an additional year before receiving a full state pension.

The one-day strike follows a nine-day action by fishermen that blocked French ports and protests from students and teachers against policies which would see those educators entering retirement not being replaced.

Commenting on yesterday's port blockade, the BBC notes: "Ferry traffic with the UK ground to a halt as fishing fleets blockaded several French ports, causing traffic to back up on English roads to busy ports such as Dover."

Two oil refineries were also blockaded in the south of the country, Reuters reports.
