Home accidents tend to decrease on what is popularly known as the unluckiest day of the year, Friday 13th, according to new research by Barclays.
The report highlighted that in the past two years claims made on Friday 13th to Barclays for
home insurance related issues such as theft, fire or water damage have increased by a substantial 15 per cent on average compared to other Fridays of the year.
Although this clashed with a ten-year old study from the British Medical Journal that argued that car accidents increase on this fateful day, Barclays Bank thought there were compelling reasons why Friday 13th could have now turned lucky.
"Maybe it's the threat of bad luck causing people to be more cautious and aware of potential accidents or perhaps it's just that the myths are wrong and Friday 13th is not actually unlucky; our statistics would certainly seem to support that theory," said Mark Till product director for Barclays Insurance.
In case superstitious British homeowners start to feel bereft without a new candidate for unluckiest day of the year, related research on home insurance showed that this was the more prosaic Monday 27th.
The superstition over Friday 13th is of uncertain origin and began in the early 20th century.
