Worries about money mean people could be rethinking their bank holiday plans according to research from the AA.

More than half (56 per cent) of the motorists surveyed by the AA said they will not be travelling this weekend, with 23 per cent citing the rising cost of fuel as the main reason.

Half of those who took part in the survey said they were going on day trips rather than a full weekend away, a figure which is three times higher compared to last year's August Bank Holiday when 17 per cent of motorists chose a day trip.

Figures from the AA's online Routeplanner show that seaside destinations such as Blackpool, Brighton and Bournemouth are set to be popular this weekend.

In related news, those planning to jet off for the bank holiday could face delays as a result of two planned airport strikes this weekend. Baggage handling staff at Gatwick and Heathrow will stage two 24 hour walkouts over pay, according to the BBC.
