The number of Brits taking gap years and extended holidays has increased rapidly over the past few decades, MSN.com has reported.

According to research from Santander Cards, while just 270,000 people took a gap year-style break in the 1970’s, around four million enjoyed such trips between 2000 and 2010.

Students currently dominate the gap year market, the research also found, with 25 per cent of students aged 18 and over said to be planning a gap year break, compared to 8 per cent of the overall population.

Santander Cards director, Ian Coles, commented, "Taking a break from work or education is becoming an increasingly appealing option for many Britons, as the job market becomes increasingly competitive and the demand for university places continues to soar."

Regionally, Londoners tended to be the keenest on taking an extended break, with 14 per cent said to be planning one, compared to just 2 per cent of those living in Wales.

Gap year travel insurance is available from InsureandGo, and can cover those planning an extended getaway.
