With school results now having been released, and the gap year market increasing, students have been advised to make sure they're covered before they set off.
Gap year specialists the Year Out Group have estimated that about 200,000 young people will opt for a gap year in 2007, as the option to take a year out is growing in popularity.
Most students choose to take their gap year straight after their A levels, marking their first long trip without their parents.
But the Year Out Group also expects about a quarter to forget to get covered with
travel insurance, despite the risky activities often undertaken during such travels.
"Obtain full travel insurance before you go. Make sure it covers all the activities and countries you wish to experience or visit," the group stated as a top tip on its website.
And medical bills incurred during the gap year could be a problem for the whole family without adequate cover, Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, told the Telegraph this week.
