Anyone considering taking a year out from their studies to travel the world has been advised to make sure they carry out careful planning before they head off and ensure they budget carefully.

Keeping costs in check and preparing for the unknown is an integral part of taking gap year getaways and taking out backpacker insurance is one way to ensure health and belongings are protected while overseas.

Stephen Heath, chief executive of FairFX.com, urged those planning this sort of adventure to figure out the amount they are likely to spend each day and then multiply this by the number of days they plan to be abroad; in this way travellers can work out how much a trip like this is actually going to cost.

Paul Martin, development manager at Gapforce, recently reiterated this view when he urged students considering a gap year to plan ahead thoroughly.

He argued that those wishing to travel should do so through a regulated gap year travel group.

InsureandGo offers backpacker insurance for gap year travellers looking to head overseas.
