Many gap-year travellers take unnecessary risks with their cash while they are overseas, it has been suggested.

Commenting recently, Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, said that while they are abroad, many people take the same approach to handling money that they have when they are at home.

He added that problems are compounded in built-up areas, with jetlag often resulting in people not thinking about the safety of their money.

"You're just trying to find your feet so you are in a more vulnerable position at that point. The advice is to have a money belt, but also split your cash and finances," he explained.

Mr Griffiths' comments came in response to research published by American Express which showed that twice as many young travellers are likely to keep all their money in one place than over-55s are.

Further findings showed that 12 per cent of respondents would put all their cash in a rucksack while they were out and about.

The travel money provider explained that bags are a primary target for thieves.
