Instances of theft occurring within people's gardens are on the increase, according to one home insurance group.

Recent research by RIAS, which provides insurance services for over-50s, suggests that Britons are now spending around £4 billion a year on accessories and improvements for their gardens.

Among the items identified as popular purchases were plants, pots, garden furniture and gardening tools. However, the firm asserts that many people are failing to protect expensive items against the risk of theft or vandalism.

"Sadly we are all now sitting targets for garden theft," says RIAS managing director Janet Connor, "yet people are not taking anywhere near enough precautions."

The firm advises homeowners to protect contents by locking tools in sheds and installing lighting security, as well as considering using gravel in driveways as a deterrent to intruders.

Advisory group Home Security Action asserts that protecting the garden is a vital part of ensuring that the home is safe and secure.

InsureandGo's home insurance service aim to provide cover for the home and its contents.
