Before undertaking any home improvement projects, consumers should ensure they have accidental damage cover to avoid having to make a costly home insurance claim, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).

Technical services officer Steve Foulsham comments that "most DIY disasters" will be covered as long as the right protection is put in place first.

He adds that the although work involving electrical installations may require a professional, there is a "general perception" among home insurance providers that most people carry out some form of renovation and improvement work on their homes and as such they will be protected if they have cover.

Recent research by home insurance firm Zurich suggested that four million buyers have moved into properties in the past five years that have had damage concealed through makeshift DIY.

Consumers shopping around for a deal on home insurance may find they can get a competitive deal from InsureandGo.
