The number of holidaymakers is expected to reach 900 million this year, according to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO).
A United Nations body with 157 member countries, the organisation holds a general assembly every two years and forecasts an increase in global tourism of 5.7 per cent from last year.
Due to meet tomorrow until November 29th in Colombia, the WTO will discuss issues that the sector faces such as global warming and energy prices.
China has been identified as a rising tourist hot spot by the organisation and it is also expected that France will be toppled from its position at the top of the preferred tourism destinations.
"France has a little more breathing room but will probably be overtaken around 2015 rather than 2020," WTO secretary general Francesco Frangialli commented.
