David Brice, managing director of Global Holidays said on Wednesday that high street travel agents still have a lot to offer to the consumer in comparison with internet sites.

The managing director of travel agent Global Holidays said that his industry still had much to offer and was competitive in prices.

He argued that the idea that prices on the internet are cheaper was sometimes a matter of perception, and a result of price comparison sites that allowed shopping around to be easier.

'In a lot of cases a high street travel agent can often offer the same sort of deals as internet agents are offering, it's just a matter of convenience,' Mr Brice said.

And although he agreed that price comparison sites are a major plus of buying through the internet, Mr Brice further added that travel agents are very much price comparison businesses, gathering the best deals from the major companies.

Travel agents should ensure that they remain competitive by updating to the best technology available to them.

But there was still a market for people wanting that face-to-face interaction offered by the travel agencies, said Global Holidays' managing director.

The comments came as high street retailers face increasing pressure, with staples such as Thomas Cook having had to reduce operations to remain competitive.
