The second instalment of a £5.5 million grant scheme to protect homes in the UK against flooding has been announced by the environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies.

The Property Level Flood Protection Grant Scheme is part of the government's response to Sir Michael Pitt's review of the handling of the 2007 floods, which devastated areas of the country.

Some £2.6 million will be allocated to 34 different schemes in high-risk areas, enabling 532 households to benefit from flood protection solutions such as air bricks covers, door guards, storm porches and flood boards.

Mr Irranca-Davies said: "There are 490,000 properties at significant risk of (river/coastal) flooding in England."

Since the floods of 2007, the government has been taking action on "a range of fronts".

Many people in areas heavily affected by flooding may find that taking out home insurance can help them in the event of a catastrophe or cover any adjustments made to the home in order to better protect it from water damage.ADNFCR-857-ID-19666031-ADNFCR
