Plans to double the fixed penalty for drivers caught excessively exceeding the speed limit have been welcomed by a leading insurance price comparison site.

Managing director of Confused.com Debra Williams stated that the site supported the scheme as it would improve road safety.

"What this means in practice is that the chance of getting a £100 fine and a ban for speeding, resulting from the addition of six points on your license, is instantly much higher," she said.

Ms Williams added that penalty points can raise the cost of car insurance premium renewal, with six increasing it by an average of 25 per cent and nine points boosting it by 50 per cent.

If motorists accrue 12 or more such points during a three-year period, they are liable to be disqualified from driving and a licence is automatically revoked if a road user builds up six or more penalty points within two years of passing their driving test.
