Great Danes cause more damages in homes across the UK than any other breed of dog, a new study has revealed.
Research by esure found that the average Great Dane - which became popular as a result of the Coronation Street dog Schmeichel - will cost its owners £669.64 over its lifetime.
Second in the list are Chihuahuas, which chew sofas and cushions to the tune of £638.41, while Mastiffs, Basset Hounds and Whippets all cause significant damage to the home - which may be covered by
pet insurance.
Mike Pickard, from esure, said: "It's not surprising that the Great Dane is number one - its sheer weight and size is bound to lead to accidents in the home."
He added that what was more surprising was that the Chihuahua was in second place.
Recent research by Sainsbury's Finance found that 1.6 million cats and dogs were put down in the last five years due to owners not being able to afford medical bills.
