The actor who famously played the Green Cross Code Man in a series of television adverts during the 1970's and 80's has called for a renewal of road safety lessons.

'The problem is that the school curriculum nowadays is so tight that there isn't any room for pedestrian road safety talks,' said actor David Prowse during the BBC Radio 4's PM programme.

Although Mr Prowse indicated that there are the occasional programmes aimed directly at pre-school children, there was not enough for the 'most vulnerable group', children aged four to 11.

And according to Mr Prowse, he might have a novel way of capturing children's attentions: 'When I started doing the talks and we were doing all the commercials, the kids reacted to it so well because all the kids knew the Green Cross Code Man was really Darth Vader.'

Mr Prowse visited about 2,000 schools worldwide during his time playing the Green Cross Code Man for TV adverts.
