Following recent concerns about the UK's aviation industry's ability to meet targets in the reduction of fuel emissions, the Airport Operator's Association (AOA) has said that criteria can be fulfilled.
Neil Pakey, chairman of the AOA, has said that the industry is pursuing a reduction of emissions through a number of policy programmes.
"The aviation industry, through the Sustainable Aviation Programme and the EU emissions trading scheme, is committed to a range of measures which will deliver real improvements in environmental performance," he comments.
He adds that environmental groups are wrong to reject the idea that emissions targets can be met alongside continuing expansion projects.
Furthermore, he notes, by taxing the industry based on emissions, further technological development will be encouraged to reduce the effect of air travel on the environment.
His comments follow the recent application for an additional runway to serve customers travelling from Stansted.
