Environmentally conscious Brits are set to ditch high emission air travel for car travel, new research by AA Personal Loans has revealed.
According to the study in the one-year period ending in March of this year, the proportion of people wanting to buy a car in the UK on environmental reasons increased three-fold.
Models such as the Ford Focus, VW Golf or Honda Civic, meant as small family cars, are increasing in popularity amongst buyers, accounting for close to a third of car sales.
British families would rather go off on holidays behind the wheels of one of these cars than to take a cheap flight that might be costly for the environment.
But according to AA Personal Loans, many families have not taken into account the drawback of the small size of these cars, and it predicts there will be problems in packing everything needed for a camping or European holiday into the vehicle.
Almost three-quarters of Brits plan to put two or more large suitcases in the boot of their cars, with a third taking clean bedding and 60 per cent packing fluffy towels.
Laptops, games consoles, TV sets, a BBQ or children's toys are other items that Britons are hoping to cram in the back of their cars.
"People's decisions to respect environment issues, in terms of driving holidays and buying small cars, are welcome, but UK holiday makers will have to think twice about what they take or consider fitting a roof containers or trailer," said Lloyd East, director of AA Personal Loans.
