The creation of greener fuels in the aviation sector is a positive step and people need to remember the benefits that flying brings both economically and socially, it has been claimed.
Laurence Price, director of aviation strategy for Mott MacDonald, said aviation contributes three per cent towards global annual CO2 emissions and to put this in perspective, industry, other types of transport and even domestic heating contribute more than this.
He commented: "You then need to understand the other contributions that the industry makes to society and to commerce through the provision of vital transport links in a globalised economy. "
According to the International Air Transport Association, the aviation sector is aiming to achieve an average improvement in fuel efficiency of 1.5 per cent a year up to 2020.
Furthermore, it aims to introduce a cap on growth in CO2 emissions from 2020 onwards and hopes to be building emissions-free planes by 2057.
