British motorists are going green and increasingly choosing cars with environmentally friendly credentials, according to new research from AA Personal Loans.

Its Deals on Wheels report shows that 23 per cent of drivers planning to purchase a new car in the next 12 months want a greener vehicle. This compares to just six per cent in 2006.

Similarly, the number of people looking to buy a sporty car has fallen from six per cent to two per cent, while just two per cent of buyers are in the lookout for a higher fuel consumption vehicle such as a people carrier compared to five per cent two years ago.

Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans, said: "Car buyers now realise that 'green' cars mean 'lean' cars with better fuel economy and cheaper tax discs."

Motorists opting for green cars could also save money on their car insurance as cheaper premiums are often available for those with low emission vehicles.

Green may be the new black, but blue and silver were the most popular vehicle colours last year according to British Car Auctions.
