Smart has been awarded a £2.5 million grant to boost its environmentally-friendly technology drive.
Those purchasing a new car - such as a greener one - should remember to take out
car insurance cover, as it is illegal to drive on UK roads without it.
Smart owner Mercedes-Benz plans to use the funds to develop the next generation of electric vehicles in a bid to bring sustainable driving to the UK.
Dermot Kelly, managing director of Mercedes-Benz, said: "The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and this has been instrumental in our decision to put the car into small series production and bring another 100 cars to the UK early in 2010."
Meanwhile, Audi recently received the What Car? Green Award 2009 for its innovative new hybrid engine design which it has showcased in its Audi A8 model.
The company achieved recognition due to the engine's ability to emit just 199g/km of CO2.
InsureandGo offers car insurance to cover all types of vehicles, including greener ones.
