The government should invest in greener travel such as high speed rail, according to Friends of The Earth (FOE).
A spokesperson said the government should make rail travel cheaper and develop rail links between the UK and short haul destinations in Europe, to try and reduce the level of carbon emissions from the aviation industry.
In 2004, almost 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions were put out by aviation in the UK, according to a report from the Airport Operators Association (AOA).
Figures from the AOA show that the use of airports has risen by 78 per cent in the last ten years, with use of regional airports also up to 48 per cent from 39 per cent.
It has been reported that people are now less willing to pay for the environmental impact of flying as they struggle financially.
A poll of more than 1,000 people by industry lobby group Flying Matters found that eight per cent of people are concerned about the environment but 77 per cent said their main concern was the state of the UK economy.
