Men and women are risking having accidents as a result of grooming themselves in their car mirrors, according to new research.

A study conducted by Woolcott Research for NRMA in Australia found that vain men risked having to make a car insurance claim as a result of checking themselves in rear-view mirrors, just as women did.

Contrary to the stereotypical view that it is just female drivers who use their car mirrors to check their appearance, the survey showed that, while a third of women were guilty, a quarter of men were also culprits.

The study revealed that drivers aged between 25 and 34 were the worst offenders.

Around five per cent of under-30s said they had nearly crashed while grooming themselves or putting on make-up.

NRMA's road safety manager Pam Leicester said: "The survey also found that majority, 82 per cent, of motorists surveyed regularly ate and drank while driving.

"While some drivers think they can do more than one thing at a time, the reality is a distracted driver is at risk of crashing, especially in unexpected or complex traffic situations."

Motorists need to ensure that they have good cover for their vehicle, which will prove vital should an accident take place. InsureandGo offers great car insurance – get a quote online.
