Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) operating in London which do not meet with new environmental criteria will face a daily charge of £200 from today (July 7th).
Part of the second phase of the capital's Low Emission Zone scheme, the new legislation will affect diesel vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes as well as buses and coaches that are not Euro III compliant.
Transport for London will give companies 28 days warning to allow them to make their fleet compliant before handing out the charges.
Nick Fairholme, head of the London Low Emission Zone at the organisation, said that the majority of vehicles are already compliant.
"We would urge the remaining operators and owners to make sure they are ready."
In other developments, the Times has reported that under new proposals, the Congestion Charge could soon be limited to core hours when traffic levels are at their highest.
London mayor Boris Johnson is also considering scrapping the western extension of the scheme.
