New research has shown that 50 per cent of young travellers are using the internet to book their holidays online, website travelmole.com has reported.

And this makes for a significant leap in the number of young tourists going online to arrange their travels, an increase of 40 per cent in the last five years, according to a survey by the Student Education Travel Confederation (WYSE).

The WYSE specialises in researching the travel experiences and behaviours of young people.

Its survey will be published next month and give a more complete picture of the habits of young travellers.

It also found that 80 per cent of young travellers will also use the internet to research their destination and get tips for their travels.

France, the US and Australia are currently the most popular places for young travellers to visit, although backpackers were more likely to leave for Thailand, Australia or New Zealand.

Travellers under 18 or over 25 took longer trips than those within that age band, as studies imposed restrictions on their tourism activities, the report also found.
