Rio de Janeiro may be synonymous with the festivities of the world's most famous carnival on the streets but visitors are often unaware that one of the most thrilling ways to experience the city is in the air.

Although Brazil's second largest city is famed for its Copacabana beach, thriving nightlife and being one of the world's most colourful tourist destinations, many visitors are now finding out that Rio is even more spectacular seen from a hang-glider.

Its natural setting, couched in forested cliffs that hang over the city's skyscrapers which look out onto the crystal blue Atlantic Ocean provides the ideal backdrop to a day spent in the sky.

Tours operate up in the mountains where the most intrepid travellers fly off of Tijuca's National Park at around 1,675ft and drift over the wondrous views – including the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks the city – before landing on Pepino beach.

Rio is the perfect starting point to a holiday in Brazil, where visitors can make their way up north to the Amazon rainforest where they can rock climb, hike, or partake in challenging jungle tours.

Over 40 adventure sports are covered automatically by InsureandGo's travel insurance policies.
