People should be sure to search the market when looking to insure a second vehicle on a car or van insurance policy, as around half of UK providers allow owners to extend a no-claims bonus to the new automobile.

New research by comparison site moneysupermarket.com notes that while some insurers have set procedures for extending bonuses, others will review applications on a case-by-case basis.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is a little known fact that many insurers now allow you to mirror your no-claims discount from one car to the next."

He added that it is prudent to choose a supplier who allows an extension of no-claims discounts.

Mr Mason has also advised car-owners to search the market before renewing a policy, as a number of providers were found to be unfairly taking advantage of customer loyalty.

The site notes that accepting a renewal policy that arrives in the post can be an easy option, but it could prove costly if consumers don't check the market first.
