The government must act to ensure healthy living schemes - such as the Department of Health's Change4Life initiative - are taught to children as part of their overall education, it has been claimed.

Rich Leigh, founder of Fat Free Fitness, said it is great that the government is promoting a healthier lifestyle, but it now needs to ensure the message is getting across to the younger generation.

He commented: "I genuinely think government campaigns such as the Change4Life project are fantastic initiatives, but not as deep-reaching as they need to be."

According to the Department of Health, one million mums claim to have attempted to change their children's behaviour as a result of Change4Life.

The department noted the scheme helps families to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle by promoting healthy habits that encourage them to eat well, move more and live longer.
