Having a healthy diet and getting lots of exercise could be the best ways for individuals to avoid a recurrence of cancer, although anyone worried about the disease might like o consider taking out life insurance.

Dr Rachel Thompson, science programme manager from the World Cancer Research Fund, said being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight are two of the main factors in helping cancer sufferers stop the disease recurring.

She commented: "There is only limited evidence on how cancer survivors can reduce their risk of cancer recurring. In the absence of better evidence, the best approach is to follow the general recommendations for cancer prevention."

According to research published in the British Medical Journal, young adults who survive childhood or adolescent cancer are clearly at risk of early cardiac morbidity and mortality not typically recognised within this age group.

However, further research is needed to determine the proper levels of risk for these survivors and the costs and benefits of early cardiovascular screening.
