The new Terminal 5 building at Heathrow has experienced difficulties with baggage handling on its first day of opening yesterday.

Upon the opening of the building, BA chief executive Willie Walsh told Channel 4 news of the excitement of passengers waiting to fly from the terminal.

"I spoke to passengers leaving on the first Paris flight. A lot of people just booked on that flight to experience T5 … It is a great day and I think people are genuinely impressed with what they are seeing", Mr Walsh commented.

However, problems with baggage handling led to a number of cancelled flights and suspension of luggage check-in services yesterday.

BA states that 80 per cent of flights are operational today and advises customers to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

The company has issued a full apology and states that full refunds will be issued to those whose flights have been disrupted.

Wherever tourists are flying from, InsureandGo offers travel insurance policies to suit individual requirements.
