Recent proposals to introduce fingerprint scanning facilities for travellers using the new Terminal 5 building at Heathrow have received criticism from a number of quarters.
Speaking on Radio 4's The World at One, a former head of security at BAA has said that the plans were unnecessary, adding that normal photographic identification would be adequate.
Also voicing opposition on the programme was Liberal Democrats MP Alan Beith.
"I think it's a very unhealthy normalisation of fingerprinting, which in many people's minds of course is associated with what you do at the scene of a crime to eliminate suspects," said Mr Beith.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reports that the Information Commissioner has informed BAA that the proposals may be in breach of the Data Protection Act, with an investigation launched last week to assess whether the operator took adequate consideration of the implications for individuals' privacy.
