Holidaymakers left in the lurch after the XL holiday firm collapsed are entitled to help other than travel insurance.

Some flights from Belfast and Dublin were cancelled after the tour operator went under, leaving thousands of people stranded.

But David Clover of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) told the BBC that the organisation was working "very closely with the travel industry" to arrange flights for the stranded customers.

The Telegraph also noted that travellers are protected under the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Atol) scheme.

But the BBC warned that this protection does not extend to people who booked directly through call centres or the XL website.

XL blamed "volatile fuel prices [and] the economic downturn" for its need to go into administration.

Meanwhile, London has been deemed the most popular European city for British travellers.

According to price comparison service Pricerunner, a quarter of the 20 most popular European cities are in the UK.

They include Edinburgh, Glasgow and Birmingham.

InsureandGo offers great value travel insurance.
