The majority of high-street travel insurance policies are designed to a "one-size fits all" specification, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) stated in recent days.

Spokesperson for the association Kelly Ostler commented: "When you fall out of that category and have any extra needs, be it a pre-existing medical condition ... or for instance, you are going on a winter sports holiday then you need to look at a different policy."

Ms Ostler added that the travel insurance market is highly competitive and as such it should not prove overly difficult for consumers to obtain a policy that meets their requirements.

Formed in 1985, the ABI represents the collective interests of the insurance industry in the UK and has around 400 companies in its membership.

Consumers shopping around for cheap travel insurance or on specific ski holiday insurance may find that they can obtain a competitive deal by contacting InsureandGo either over the phone or online.
