Secretary of state for the environment Hilary Benn emphasised the importance of caring for domestic animals recently.

Following a visit to the Blue Cross animal hospital where he saw animals attending an obesity clinic, he reminded consumers of their obligations to their four-legged friends.

"We are all responsible for doing the best for our animals and making sure that we take our duties as pet owners seriously," he commented.

Chief executive of the Blue Cross John Rutter added that in the new year, when many people make resolutions to eat more healthily, they should make the same commitment for their animals.

In related news, individuals who bought animals over the festive period were recently advised by Fair Investment Company to make sure they have adequate pet insurance to protect their new additions.

Consumers shopping around for pet insurance may well find that InsureandGo can offer them a great deal on a policy.
