Poorly holidaymakers could end up losing hundreds of pounds as a result of being taken ill during their trip, MSN.com has reported.

According to a poll of 2,000 people, conducted by Panadol, the most common holiday ailments are stomach upsets, experienced by 66 per cent of those surveyed, sunburn (62 per cent) and insect bites (55 per cent).

74 per cent of those who had fallen ill on holiday said that they had missed as much as four days of their trip as a result, equivalent to £322 of an average £564 holiday.

Dr Sarah Brewer, GP and author, commented, “We work all year to enjoy a week or two in the sun, so it’s well worth taking a few simple steps to be prepared for any health complaints that might spoil the fun.

“Always take a simple first aid kit with you on holiday, plus stock up with sunscreen and after-sun products and stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.”

For those looking to cover themselves for emergency medical treatment whilst abroad, comprehensive travel insurance is available from leading provider InsureandGo.
