New research has indicated that Britons are clueless about car insurance when abroad, many believing it to be covered by their travel insurance.

According to the report by comparison site uSwitch, close to 70 per cent of British tourists don't know specifically what they are covered for by their insurance.

And 2.5 million people think that their travel insurance will cover them for road accidents while abroad.

Just over that amount don't take necessary safety precautions while abroad, driving without a safety belt or breaking speed limits.

And drivers should also take note that in the European Union the legal limit is almost half that of the UK.

"Many providers demand extra payment from drivers to take out insurance for overseas use. Even if a policy does extend to cover driving abroad, motorists need to be aware that insurers often limit the number of days that a car can be driven abroad in any one year, and that sometimes you cannot use this allowance in one go - you have to return to the UK in between," said Aron Thompson, head of insurance at uSwitch.
