The majority of holidaymakers feel that the contents of hotel mini-bars are too pricey, according to a new survey.

A study by TripAdvisor found that 86 per cent felt they were being ripped off, with the costs of the food and drink in the mini bar often twice or three times the price of the item elsewhere.

And the contents are not just expensive, but seem to lead to trouble for holidaymakers, with a quarter having had an argument with hotel staff over mini bar costs and 34 per cent claiming they had been charged wrongly.

Some cheeky holidaymakers have replaced mini-bar items they have taken with cheaper alternatives from shops in order not to be charged the excessive prices.

"Judging by the results of this survey, hotel proprietors need to think about reducing prices, introducing more healthy options and have a more tolerant attitude about guests using the mini-bar to store their own items," said Ian Rumgay, communications manager at TripAdvisor.

Despite the inflated prices, holidaymakers still enjoy mini-bar items because of their convenience, with nuts, peanut M&Ms, Pringles and bottled water among the favourite items.
