Holidaymakers have been urged to leave all they don't need behind, as a new survey reveals that many items of luggage stay packed.

According to a survey by travel site Youtravel.com, 46 per cent of male travellers take their computer along with them but never use it.

And 37 per cent of women who take their gym kits on holiday leave them untouched, compared with 22 per cent of men.

Holiday reading proved relatively more popular, even if 18 per cent of books taken abroad by males surveyed remained unread.

For women, hair straighteners (28 per cent) and shoes (16 per cent) were the items that were found to be not so necessary once on holiday.

Paul Riches, sales and marketing director of YouTravel, also argued that men were most likely to take unusual items to amuse themselves, such as snorkels and travel speakers, and then never use them.

Both sexes overpack more or less equally, he commented.

One item you must never leave behind is adequate travel insurance. InsureandGo has great value deals, click here or go online for a quote.
