The strengthening of the euro against the pound means that holidaymakers taking a trip to Europe will find they are less well off then they would have been 12 months ago, it has been claimed.
According to the 2007 Post Office barometer, the eurozone is much more expensive than the US. For example, the cost of a bottle of Coca-Cola in Florida is priced £1.60, compared with £2.94 in France.
In Turkey, which is not yet part of the EU, an evening meal in a restaurant for two, including wine, costs £30.14. The same meal in France, Italy, Portugal and Greece would cost 20 per cent more.
Travel insurance customers who want to holiday in Europe should check out Spain as it is the cheapest place destination in the eurozone. Indeed, prices are 15 per cent less than France, Portugal and Italy.
Post Office travel chief Helen Warburton said: "Looking forward we believe that holidaymakers will be smarter about where they choose to go this year.
"Prices vary quite significantly within Europe so people will be looking to visit countries where a lower cost of living will offer them more for their pound, like Spain and Turkey."
In the month-long run up to Easter, sales of US dollars increased by 23 per cent, rising to 48 per cent during Easter week.
