Taking a break within the UK can be more relaxing and better for the environment than a foreign trip, the Campaign for Better Public Transport has insisted.
Cat Hobbs, public transport campaigner for the transport policy-setter, said that going abroad can often be quite a stressful experience, with people experiencing problems with baggage handling and other delays.
However, taking a holiday within the UK can often avoid that hassle, she suggested.
"And often taking the train instead of the plane is the best way to do that. It's also a much lower carbon way of doing it," she said.
She explained that travelling by train uses about an eighth of the amount of carbon used by a plane on an equivalent journey.
According to the Public Transport Statistics Bulletin 2008, more people are choosing to travel by train.
The organisation recorded 1.2 billion passenger journeys during the 2007-2008 season, up 5.8 per cent on the previous year.
