Carrying out environmentally-friendly alterations to a property can be one of the best things that a person can do and could go some way to reducing fuel costs, it has been claimed.

However, anyone making large-scale changes to their home might want to consult with their home insurance provider to ensure that any work carried out is covered.

A spokesperson for Friends of the Earth, said that up to 70,000 jobs could be created in the UK if homeowners and local councils looked to improve the insulation of properties and embraced green energy microgeneration.

She noted: "The perception is that [environmental awareness] has to be something that goes with sacrifice and actually it doesn't. It can be something that is a win-win situation."

According to the Climate Change Act 2008, the UK has committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions across the country by 80 per cent by 2050, with an intermediary goal of a reduction in CO2 emissions of 26 per cent by 2020.
