Taking out a
home insurance policy should be considered as a "social responsibility", according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
According to Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the organisation, taking out a home policy is often low on the list of priorities for some groups, with other household costs given greater priority.
Mr Staddon commented: "A lot of people think 'what are the chances of my house burning down?' Pretty low, therefore they do not take out insurance."
However, he advised that failing to take out home protection can prove to be a costly decision, with last year's floods cited as an example of the importance of adequate cover.
Mr Staddon continued by saying that Biba was committed to making adequate home policies more accessible to vulnerable groups to reduce the financial burden of taking out cover.
According to a report published in December by the Treasury, a new action plan will see a focus on the provision of affordable home contents protection for those living in rented accommodation.
