Home insurance should always be at the top of the list to ensure that families are not hit by large bills should an incident occur in the home.

Property owners in Scarborough were left shocked after a burst water main in the St John's Road and Wykeham area of the city caused a ten foot high flume of water, reports the Yorkshire Post.

The incident was deemed a flooding risk and emergency services were called in to help divert the water away from homes.

Police and fire-fighters helped to construct makeshift barriers from fire engine ladders and tarpaulins, according to the newspaper.

Residents of the street were lucky to escape flooding and damage to their houses, which could have resulted in a claim on home insurance policies.

Flooding is a cause for concern across much of the UK, with Wales Online recently reporting that an extra £38 million is to be spent on flood defences in the country by 2014.

InsureandGo home insurance can provide cover against unexpected incidents in the home such as water damage or breakages, at a low cost to the property owner.
