A lax attitude towards home security means that nearly 15 million Britons risk needing to make home insurance claims after advertising their costly items through their windows.

Research by insurer LV= suggests that nearly two thirds (65 per cent) of people have items in their homes that are visible to anyone on the street who looks at their property.

The most common items left on show include televisions, games consoles and DVD players, alongside collectables and antiques.

Spokesperson for LV= Martin Milliner comments: "Thieves are much more likely to target your property if they can see items worth stealing and high-value electronic items are just the kind of thing they are looking for."

As such, he advises consumers to keep curtains and blinds closed to hide their belongings from potential thieves and reduce the chance of having to make a home insurance claim.

Consumers were recently advised by Direct Line to not hide all their presents in one place as this would allow an opportunistic burglar to make off with all the gifts in one fell swoop.

Those shopping around for a competitive deal on home insurance may find that InsureandGo can offer them a cheap but comprehensive quote.
