With a threat of severe gales issued by the Met Office, now could be a good time to make sure that your home is properly insured against damage caused by inclement weather, esure has reported.

Risks that could come with storms include falling trees and masonry and problems with roof tiles coming loose, with damage to homes and cars or even injuries to passers-by a potential issue.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said "With the weather seemingly breaking new records each year, we would urge every homeowner in the UK to take steps to prevent storm damage right now."

Esure have advised homeowners of the top six "storm MOT priorities" and emphasised the importance of the correct home insurance as we enter the winter season.

One of the tips is to check that light garden furniture or children's toys such as trampolines are secure as they could be lifted by a strong wind.

Moneyfacts reports that Halifax Insurance figures show £2.5 billion of damage was caused by water leaking into homes through damaged roofs in 2007.
