Those travelling abroad may not need to take out additional luggage cover if their home insurance policy covers them for contents outside of their home, the AA reports.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "If you have this cover, it will include all your property – baggage, camera, personal effects, et cetera. There is therefore no need to include baggage cover if you take out travel insurance."

However, he added that it is important to establish whether or not home insurance policies cover items outside of the UK.

In related news, recent research has shown that many people are leaving valuables on display inside their home, increasing the risk of burglary.

A study by Liverpool Victoria found that 68 per cent of households leave TVs, computers and jewellery on display, with a quarter of homeowners estimating the value of property visible from outside their home to be in excess of £35,000.
