Consumers were advised that responsibility lies with them to ensure that they have adequate protection for their gifts over the festive period, even if they store them at a friend or relative's house.
Halifax
Home Insurance asserts that wherever policyholders are planning to hide their presents, it is up to them to have adequate cover.
Senior underwriter for the firm David Rochester comments: "It's important to remember that the onus is on homeowners to have the correct insurance in place to cover your gifts from loss or damage, even if they are being stored away from your home."
The
home insurance provider also states that some policyholders try and solve issues of protection by increasing their contents cover for a short period either side of Christmas.
However, Halifax notes that once this phase concludes, they may find themselves underinsured as many expensive gifts remain in the family property.
The firm recently noted that 19 per cent of homeowners will go away over the festive period, potentially leaving their home at risk of burglary.
