Home insurers set for stormy year

Homeowners are being advised to make sure that their home insurance policies are up to date ahead of what is expected to be a stormy few months.

Insurance experts warn that in the light of recent storms and the likelihood of future trouble, homeowners must take sensible precautions to protect their properties.

According to the one company, there are 620,000 storm-related claims each year, worth an average £522.

Almost 30 homes in Kensal Rise remain uninhabitable after last week's tornado, which tore through the north-west London suburb.

Despite the continued warnings, 36 per cent of homes in Britain are uninsured.

This year has also bought renewed warnings for the importance of flood insurance, with many households uninsured and more than two-thirds of those in flood risk areas failing to take steps to find out if their property is at risk.

This weekend, York was hit by severe flooding, with the River Ouse rising to a depth that could submerge a double-decker bus.
