The majority of Britons do not make home improvements to add value to their property, but simply because they want it to be nice, according to research from Shelter.

In collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects, the housing charity conducted a survey to determine why people choose to upgrade their property.

Major improvements such as extending kitchens, adding conservatories and converting loft space proved most popular.

However, the added value of fitting extra living space into a home was not the most prevalent factor in encouraging homeowners to undertake such projects.

For almost three in four (74 per cent), the main deciding factor was simply a desire to improve the look of their home and make the most of it.

Last week, JML resident DIY presenter Andrew Bernard told homeowners simple tasks such as repainting a wall can have an immediate impact on the look of a home.
